Finding A Care Home
A case study of how we help solicitors by working on behalf of their clients
“It has been great working with you and it is such a testament to all your hard work at Clarity to see Mr G so happy and settled.”
The Situation
Mrs. F was 86 years old and had been in a residential care home for two years when she was referred to us by her solicitor. Mrs. F had initially moved into the care home with her husband who was very frail and who she had been finding it increasingly hard to care for at home.
Unfortunately, shortly after their arrival at the home Mr. F deteriorated and died in hospital. Although Mrs. F returned home briefly she had a fall and, with her immediate family living a significant distance away, felt unable to stay alone at home. She returned to the care home, but began to feel bored and isolated in an environment where many of the residents had much higher care needs than her.
Her solicitor, who acts as her attorney, contacted Clarity Care Consulting as she felt she didn’t have the necessary time or knowledge of alternative care options available.
Our Approach To Finding The Right Care Home
We met with Mrs. F to talk through what she was looking for and what the potential options might be. Talking them through we agreed that she would really like a residential care home that would provide her with company and stimulation, and would also be convenient for her family when they came to visit. We worked with Mrs. F and her solicitor to design a brief and agree a timescale, and then began researching homes that fitted her criteria and had the things she was looking for.
Starting with Care Quality Commission reports, we reviewed the standards of care provided in each of the homes, drawing up an initial shortlist of homes to visit. As Mrs. F was unable to travel, we visited five homes talking to staff, taking photographs and video and gathering relevant promotional materials. Based on this research we put together a report with our recommendations and visited Mrs. F to talk through each of the options.
At a follow up meeting with Clarity and her solicitor Mrs. F decided to move to one of the care homes recommended and we arranged for the manager of the new home to meet with Mrs. F and talk through her care needs, expectations and planned timing for the move. With Mrs. F happy in her choice, Clarity then oversaw all aspects of the move including contract negotiations, sending of care plans and the transfer of Mrs. F and her belongings.
Once the move was complete we made a further two visits to see Mrs. F to discuss how she was settling in and to ensure her new care home was meeting both her needs and expectations.
The Outcome
Working with Clarity allowed Mrs. F’s solicitor to focus on her role as her attorney while ensuring that her client’s care and quality of life were improved.
Mrs. F’s family asked the solicitor to provide regular updates on how the Care Home was continuing to meet Mrs. F’s needs, the solicitor implemented our of our Care Monitoring Services, so that they had monthly updates from us on how the care was working, along with any recommendations of any changes required.
